The Faculty of Psychology, University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) was established in 1983, with the Decree of Establishment No. 190/K/14.08/KopVI/II/1984. At the beginning of its establishment, the Faculty of Psychology UMS was under the control of the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) so that most of the supporting lecturers came from the lecturers of the Faculty of Psychology UGM.
Since its establishment until 2003, the Faculty of Psychology UMS only has one study program, namely the Psychology Undergraduate Study Program. Currently, the Faculty of Psychology has three study programs, namely the Psychology Undergraduate Study Program, the Professional Psychology Masters Study Program (established in 2004) which is the first psychology masters program in Indonesia, and in 2007 the Psychology (Science) Masters Study Program was established. On August 4, 2017, the UMS Psychology Undergraduate Study Program officially received an A predicate, and in 2021 it managed to improve its performance by obtaining an “Excellent” accreditation degree from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT). Meanwhile, the Master of Professional Psychology obtained the “B” accreditation, and the Master of Psychology obtained the “Excellent” accreditation. This achievement signifies the commitment of the Faculty of Psychology UMS in maintaining its quality as one of the centers of psychology studies in Indonesia. Until now, the Faculty of Psychology UMS has graduated more than 9000 people both at the undergraduate and master levels.
The Faculty of Psychology UMS played an important role in the birth of Islamic Psychology in Indonesia. It was marked by several historical moments, namely: in 1994 it was the place where Islamic Psychology was declared in the National Symposium of Islamic Psychology 1. In 1998 it again hosted the National Symposium on Islamic Psychology, and in 2003 it was entrusted to hold the I Congress of the Islamic Psychology Association (API).
